For the 2017 Festival of Women Writers, Jewelle Gomez, celebrated in the genre of Speculative Fiction, will present the workshop, WOMEN DO WRITE SPECULATIVE FICTION. What does it take to create a new universe and fashion a story that is both credible and incredible? Though under-recognized by the science fiction/speculative fiction establishment, some women have done important work in the genre. This workshop will discuss and do exercises using speculative and science fiction conventions. WOMEN DO WRITE SPECULATIVE FICTION is a very special opportunity to work with one of the groundbreaking authors of women’s speculative fiction.

Jewelle Gomez is also the author of several plays. In 2015, Festival of Women Writers 2015 presented a table reading of Gomez’s, “Leaving The Blues,” a memory play in two acts chronicling the life and career of the legendary blues singer, Alberta Hunter. Members of The Festival planning committee and Hobart residents were the cast members. We were thrilled to be part of this creative process.
